This letter makes note that the responsibility to detect text written by AI, such as ChatGPT, is the sole responsibility of editors and journals/publishers. This proposed policy is made to ensure proper authorship and to therefore assuage readers of a paper's authorship validity-so as not to have AI-driven guest authorship-so that the integrity of the biomedical literature is not further degraded. Two letters to the editor were recently written in this journal by ChatGPT and edited by the author. The extent to which ChatGPT contributed to those letters' content is unknown.

Peer reviewers are instrumental to the publication of high-quality scholarly manuscripts. However, there are challenges within current models, including how best to recognize (and reward) reviewers for their contribution. The International Journal of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork Editorial Team is committed to enhancing the peer-review process in 2023 and invites colleagues to become reviewers.

Májovský and colleagues have investigated the important issue of ChatGPT being used for the complete generation of scientific works, including fake data and tables. The issues behind why ChatGPT poses a significant concern to research reach far beyond the model itself. Once again, the lack of reproducibility and visibility of scientific works creates an environment where fraudulent or inaccurate work can thrive. What are some of the ways in which we can handle this new situation?

OBJECTIVES: To assess the changes in compliance with the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in four orthodontic journals. To assess whether reporting of randomization, concealment, and blinding has improved.
METHODS: Electronic hand searching was undertaken to identify orthodontic RCTs published in four orthodontic journals from January 2016 to June 2017 (T1) and from January 2019 to June 2020 (T2). The journals were the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics (AJO-DO), Angle Orthodontist (AO), European Journal of Orthodontics (EJO), and Journal of Orthodontics (JO). Each item on the CONSORT checklist was scored as either reported, not reported, or not applicable for each paper reporting an RCT.
RESULTS: The study included 69 papers reporting an RCT published in T1 and 64 RCTs published in T2. The median CONSORT score in T1 was 48.7% (interquartile range [IQR] 27.6%, 68.6%) and 67% in T2 (IQR 43.9%, 79.5%). This increase was statistically significant (P = 0.001) and largely attributable to improved reporting in AO (P = 0.016) and EJO (P = 0.023). Reporting did not change significantly in AJO-DO (P = 0.13) or in JO (P = 1.0). Reporting of random allocation sequence generation (OR 2.09; 95% CI 1.01, 4.29) and concealment of allocation (OR 2.27%, 95% CI 1.12, 4.57) were significantly higher in T2 compared with T1. Reporting of blinding did not change significantly.
CONCLUSION: Overall reporting of CONSORT items in reports of orthodontic RCTs published in the AJO-DO, AO, EJO, and JO, improved significantly from 2016-17 to 2019-20. This could be improved further by authors, journal referees, and editors adhering to the guidelines.

  8. J Allied Health. 2023 ;52(2): 87
The Journal of Allied Health (JAH) produced by the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) shares many common features with other periodicals in the wide world of professional publications. The JAH is issued quarterly while other journals range from weekly to annual reviews. Irrespective of periodicity, similar costs usually characterize a vast range of publications. For example, one or more salaried editors must decide: which manuscripts will be selected to undergo peer review, which peer reviewers will be invited to conduct assessments of submitted articles, and which papers will be accepted or rejected for publication. Related costs include copyediting, typesetting, mailing paper copies of the journal to subscribers, and creating and archiving an electronic version of each issue. Costs for most journals typically are offset by a combination of subscription fees, authors' page charges, and advertisement revenue.

This review guides prospective authors through the necessary steps to submit a paper to a scientific journal. The journey to publication begins with selecting a journal to submit the manuscript. Considerations when choosing a journal include appropriateness, determining whether a given journal is an ethical and high-quality publication, measurements of journal ranking or impact, and other factors such as associated author costs or high rejection rates. The importance of reading and following the author guidelines is highlighted because they outline the journal's overarching editorial policies and scope of publication, and provide journal-specific instructions for manuscript preparation. Strategies for successful submission as well as common pitfalls to avoid are shared, with specific tips applicable to submitting a paper to Respiratory Care Finally, insights into what the editor wants may guide authors as they seek publication.
