      Background: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a neuroautoimmune disease featured by the presence of antibodies targeting neuronal surface, synaptic, or intracellular antigens. An increasing number of articles on its clinical manifestations, treatments, and prognosis have appeared in recent years. The objectives of this study were to summarize this growing body of literature and provide an overview of hotspots and trends in AE research using bibliometric analysis.Methods: We retrieved AE-related articles published between 1999 and 2022 from the Web of Science Core Collection. Using bibliometric websites and software, we analyzed the data of AE research, including details about countries, institutions, authors, references, journals, and keywords.
    Results: We analyzed 3348 articles, with an average of 32.83 citations per article and an H-index of 141. The USA (1091, 32.587%), China (531, 15.860%), Germany (447, 13.351%), England (266, 7.945%), and Japan (213, 6.362%) had the greatest numbers of publications. The top five institutions by numbers of publications were Oxford (143, 4.271%), the Udice French Research Universities (135, 4.032%), the University of Pennsylvania (135, 4.032%), l'Institut National de la Sante de la Recherche Medicale Inserm (113, 3.375%), and the University of Barcelona (110, 3.286%). The most productive authors were J. Dalmau (98, 2.927%), A. Vincent (65, 2.479%), H. Pruess (64, 1.912%), C. G. Bien (43, 1.284%), and F. Graus (43, 1.284%). "autoimmune encephalitis" was the most frequently used keyword (430), followed by "antibodies" (420), "NMDA receptor encephalitis" (383), and "limbic encephalitis" (368). In recent years, research hotspots have focused on the diagnosis and immunotherapy of NMDAR encephalitis and on limbic encephalitis.
    Conclusion: Developed Western countries have made significant contributions to this field. China has shown a steady increase in the number of publications in recent years, but the quality and influence of these articles warrant efforts at improvement. Future directions in AE research lie in two key areas: (i) the clinical manifestations, prevalence, and prognosis of AE (enabled by advances in diagnosis); and (ii) the efficacy and safety of targeted, individualized immunotherapy.

      Background: Cancer is a serious threat to people's lives and health, killing millions of people every year. Here, we performed a bibliometric analysis of tumor N6-methyladenosine methylation data between 2001 and 2022 to understand research trends and potential future directions.Methods: A total of 890 papers published in the Web of Science core collection database between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2022 were analyzed. Bibliometric analysis was performed using VOSviewer software to explore citations, co-authorship, co-citations, and co-occurrence.
    Results: Although few papers were published before 2018, there was a rapid increase in publications after 2018. The People's Republic of China published 810 papers with 16,957 citations, both ranking first in the word. Sun Yat Sen University had the highest number of citations and published articles (67 published papers and 2702 citations), indicative of its active collaborative research status. Wang Xiao was the most co-cited author with 546 co-citations. Huang Yufei and Meng Jia ranked first with a link strength of 22, making them the most active collaborative authors. Frontiers in Oncology and Nature were the most active and co-cited journals, with 57 papers and 1953 co-citations, respectively. Studies of tumor N6-methyladenosine methylation can be divided into three categories: "tumor metabolism", "tumor bioinformatics and immunity", and "tumor progression".
    Conclusions: This study systematically summarized the research on tumor N6-methyladenosine methylation during the past 20 years and suggested potential ways to explore its biomarkers and immunotherapy in the future.

      PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of articles published in Ophthalmology Journals from Arab countries from 2012 to 2022.METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis of all original ophthalmology research and review articles published by authors with an affiliation with an institution from Arab countries and indexed in the ISI Web of Science between January 2012 and December 2022.
    RESULTS: For the years 2012-2022, 4292 articles published in Ophthalmology Journals by authors from Arab-based institutions were identified. A 2.11-fold progressive increase in the number of publications was observed over the last decade with a substantial increase in publication volume during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemic. The countries with the highest number of publications were Egypt (38.51%), Saudi Arabia (35.56%), and the United Arab Emirates (7.88%). According to affiliation, authors from King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) (n = 644) published the highest number of ophthalmology articles, followed by King Saud University (n = 585) and Cairo University (n = 393).
    CONCLUSION: Over the last decade, the overall productivity of research in the field of ophthalmology has significantly increased. Majority of the articles in ophthalmology were published by authors from Egypt and Saudi Arabia with KKESH as the most productive institution among Arab nations.

      Backgroundand aims: Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) is a serious clinical problem after Arthroplasty. The research field on PJI is emerging, but there is a paucity of information on the most impactful publications on it. This prompted us to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the global research output, from 2003 to 2022, to identify the growth of publications, the key players in this research field and to evaluate the characteristics of highly-cited publications (HCPs) on the PJI.Methods: Publications related to PJI research were identified globally from the Scopus database, using specific keywords, covering the literature from 2003 to 2022. The HCPs were considered those with 100 or more citations. Information on publication year, citation count, funding sources, title, author, journal, country, institution, research area, and strategic keywords were collected from these HCPs. Publication data was imported into Microsoft Excel and analyzed further using VOSviewer and R software.
    Results: There were 182 HCPs (3.12%), which received a total citation of 124701 (average CPP of 21.41), with the citation range from 100 to 1921. Research articles were the most predominant publications (69.2%), but their average citations per paper (CPP) of 189.78 was lower than that of Review articles (average CPP: 253.17). The USA has been the leading country in terms of total publications (31.58%), and HCPs (36.99%), followed by Switzerland, Spain, UK and China. There were no HCPs from developing countries. J. Parvizi of Thomas Jefferson University, USA (with a total publications of 31 and an average CPP of 315.7), and W. Zimmerli of Basel University, Switzerland (with a TP of 11 and an average CPP of 341.9), were the most productive and impactful authors in PJI global research output.
    Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis identified the most productive and impactful authors, organizations, countries, and journals in the research of PJI, of the last two decades.

      Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a unique medical system of historic significance, holding substantial influence within China and beyond. In recent years, the efficacy of TCM in treating acute pancreatitis has been substantiated. Despite over two decades of development in this domain, a bibliometric analysis illustrating TCM's role in acute pancreatitis remains scarce.OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive analysis of findings in the field of acute pancreatitis and TCM using machine learning and text-analyzing methodologies. The intent is to provide scientific and intuitive support to researchers and clinicians.
    METHODS: We searched the Web of Science Core Collection database for publications and related literature from 2007 to mid-2023. Tools such as Excel, Citespace V, and Vosviewer were utilized for bibliometric analysis. That included assessing published and cited counts, co-authorship mapping, co-citation analysis, burst detection, and keyword analysis.
    RESULTS: The study revealed a fluctuating growth trend in the number of publications and citations since 2007. As many as 147 institutions from 13 countries, with a total of 756 authors, have published 202 papers in 76 academic journals. Sichuan University in China and Tang Wenfu have been recognized as the most influential national institution and author. The most frequently published journal is "Pancreas", while the most cited is the "World Journal of Gastroenterology". Commonly used single herbs in this field include Baicalin, Emodin, Rhubarb, and Salvia miltiorrhizae. Frequently used herbal formulations include Da chengqi decoction, Chaiqin chengqi decoction, and Qing yi decoction. Current research hotspots primarily surround concepts like hmgb1, nf-kappab, nfr2, oxidative stress, exosomes, nlrp3, pyroptosis, etc. Potential future research themes could relate to pharmacology, reducing hmgb1, inflammatory response, cell activation, Qing Yi-decoction, etc. This review holds significant guiding importance for clinical and scientific research into TCM treatment for acute pancreatitis in the future.

      BACKGROUND: Despite the ubiquitous use and profound impact of the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), no study to date has quantitatively assessed its impact on scientific literature and clinical practice. Therefore, we comprehensively analyze scientific publications and clinical practice guidelines employing the GCS to gauge its clinical and academic impact, identify research hotspots, and inform future research.METHODS: A cross-sectional bibliometric analysis was performed on Scopus to obtain relevant publications incorporating the GCS from 1974 to 2022. In addition, a systematic review of existing clinical practice guidelines in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Trip Database was performed. Validated bibliometric parameters including article title, journal, publication year, authors, citation count, country, institution, keywords, impact factor, and references were assessed. When evaluating clinical practice guidelines, the sponsoring organization, country of origin, specialty, and publication year were assessed.
    RESULTS: A total of 37,633 articles originating from 3,924 different scientific journals spanning 1974 to 2022 were included in the final analysis. The compound annual growth rate was 16.7%. Of 104 countries, the United States had the highest total number of publications (n=8,517). World Neurosurgery was the scientific periodical with the highest number of publications (n=798). The top trending author-supplied keyword was "traumatic brain injury" (n=3,408). The 97 included clinical practice guidelines most commonly employed the GCS in the fields of internal medicine (n=22, 23%), critical care (n=21, 22%), and neurotrauma (n=19, 20%).
    CONCLUSION: At the turn of the 50th anniversary of the GCS, we provided an objective description of the "path to success" of the GCS both in terms of its scientific and clinical impact. These results hold not only a historical but also a didactic value. Our analysis of some of the factors that led the GCS to become such a widespread and highly influential score may assist future researchers in their development of future outcome measures and clinical scores, especially as they become increasingly relevant in an evidence-based, data-driven age.

      Objective: As breast cancer cases rise globally, post-mastectomy lymphedema garners increasing scholarly attention. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Breast Cancer-Related Lymphedema (BCRL) research from 2003 to 2022, identifying trends and providing global research insights for future studies.Method: The literature for this analysis was extracted from the Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection, encompassing 1199 publications, including 702 articles and 101 reviews, totaling 803. Using advanced bibliometric tools such as VOSviewer and CiteSpace, quantitative and visual analyses were performed to map collaboration networks, research clusters, and emerging trends. The search strategy included specific terms related to lymphedema, breast cancer, and BCRL, ensuring a comprehensive representation of the research landscape.
    Results: The bibliometric analysis revealed a steady increase in BCRL publications over the studied period, reaching a peak in 2018. The United States emerged as the leading contributor to BCRL literature, with China also demonstrating a significant presence. Collaboration networks were visualized, showcasing the interconnectedness of institutions and researchers globally. Key research hotspots identified include preventive strategies, complex decongestive therapy, and reconstructive interventions.
    Conclusion: In conclusion, this pioneering bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of BCRL research trends and collaborations globally. The findings contribute valuable insights into the evolution of the field, highlighting areas of focus and emerging research themes. This study serves as a foundational resource for researchers, clinicians, and policymakers, fostering evidence-based practices and interventions for BCRL in the future.

      BACKGROUND: Image-guided surgery (IGS) refers to surgery navigated by medical imaging technology, helping doctors better clarify tumor boundaries, identify metastatic lymph nodes and preserve surrounding healthy tissue function. Recent studies have provided expectable momentum of the application of IGS in prostate cancer (PCa). We aim to comprehensively construct a bibliometric analysis of the application of IGS in PCa.METHOD: We searched publications related to application of IGS in PCa from 2013 to 2023 on the web of science core collection (WoSCC) databases. VOSviewer, CiteSpace and R package "bibliometrix" were used for bibliometric analysis.
    RESULTS: 2, 389 articles from 75 countries and 2, 883 institutions led by the United States were included. The number of publications related to the application of IGS in PCa kept high in the last decade. Johns Hopkins University is the top research institutions. Journal of Nuclear Medicine has the highest popularity as the selection of journal and co-cited journal. Pomper Martin G. had published the most paper. Ali Afshar-Oromieh was co-cited most frequently. The clinical efficacy of PSMA-PET/CT in PCa diagnosis and treatment are main topics in this research field, with emerging focuses on the use of fluorescence imaging guidance technology in PCa. "PSMA" and "PET/CT" are the main keywords as long-term research hotspots.
    CONCLUSION: This study is the first bibliometric analysis of researches on application of IGS in PCa with 3 recognized bibliometric software, providing an objective description and comprehensive guidance for the future relevant investigations.

      Objectives: Summarize the progress and hot topic evolution of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) research in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in recent years and predict future research directions. Methods: Relevant articles from the Web of Science until 31 October 2023 were obtained. Bibliometric analysis of included articles was performed using software (VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and Bibliometrix). The volume and citation of publications, as well as the country, institution, author, journal, keywords of the articles were used as variables to analyze the research trends and hot spot evolution. Results: 1,118 literature from 2008 to 2023 were retrieved from database, with 25 countries/regions, 793 institutions, 5,426 authors, 261 journals involved. Global cooperation was centered on China, Japan, and the United States. Zhengzhou University, an institution from China, had the highest publication. The most prolific author was Guo Wei, and the most prolific journal was Oncology Letters. Analysis of keywords revealed that the research in this field revolved around the role of ncRNAs in the occurrence, development, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of ESCC, mainly including micro RNAs, long non-coding RNAs, and then circular RNAs. Conclusion: Overall, research on ncRNAs in ESCC remains strong. Previous research has mainly focused on the basic research, with a focus on the mechanism of ncRNAs in the occurrence, development, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of ESCC. Combining current research with emerging disciplines to further explore its mechanisms of action or shifting the focus of research from preclinical research to clinical research based on diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, will be the main breakthrough in this field in the future.

      BACKGROUND: With the exponential growth of publications in the field of investigator-initiated research/trials (IIRs/IITs), it has become necessary to employ text mining and bibliometric analysis as tools for gaining deeper insights into this area of study. By using these methods, researchers can effectively identify and analyze research topics within the field.METHODS: This study retrieved relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection and conducted bioinformatics analysis. The latent Dirichlet allocation model, which is based on machine learning, was utilized to identify subfield research topics.
    RESULTS: A total of 4315 articles related to IIRs/IITs were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection. After excluding duplicates and articles with missing abstracts, a final dataset of 3333 articles was included for bibliometric analysis. The number of publications showed a steady increase over time, particularly since 2000. The United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, Japan, Switzerland, and France emerged as the most productive countries in terms of IIRs/IITs. The citation analysis revealed intriguing trends, with certain highly cited articles showing a significant increase in citation frequency in recent years. A model with 45 topics was deemed the best fit for characterizing the extensively researched fields within IIRs/IITs. Our analysis revealed 10 top topics that have garnered significant attention, spanning domains such as community health, cancer treatment, brain development and disease mechanisms, nursing research, and stem cell therapy. These top topics offer researchers valuable directions for further investigation and innovation. Additionally, we identified 12 hot topics, which represent the most cutting-edge and highly regarded research areas within the field.
    CONCLUSION: This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the current research landscape and provides valuable insights for researchers working in this domain.

      Watermelon is an important horticultural plant. A bibliometric analysis of the watermelon literature was carried out in order to analyze the research state, hotspots, and trends, as well as to highlight the overall watermelon research development from a holistic viewpoint. The summary of watermelon research is given via metrological analysis based on a set of indices using a newly built Bibliometrix R-package tool. This study gathered 6,632 documents indexed in the Core Collection of Web of Science (WoS) in the domain of watermelon from 1992 to 2022 using bibliometrix. The results indicated that the number of published articles showed an apparently upward trend. The United States was in the first place, with Plant Disease being the most productive journal. Levi A from the United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service is the most prolific author, and Levi A is the most cited; The most frequently used keywords by authors are "growth", "resistance", "identification", "yield", "quality" "plants", "watermelon stomach" and "expression"; The most talked-about issues in this subject are resistance, yield, and quality, which highlight the crucial research areas. To effectively comprehend the turning moments for future research, it is useful to monitor the hotspots and frontiers of watermelon studies. The results highlight the future paths for study in the field of watermelon and provide useful information for researchers interested in the topic.

      BACKGROUND Sleep disorders are a common disease faced by people today and can lead to fatigue, lack of concentration, impaired memory, and even death. In recent years, the development of brain stimulation techniques has provided a new perspective for the treatment of sleep disorders. However, there is a lack of bibliometric analyses related to sleep disorders and brain stimulation techniques. Therefore, this study analyzed the application status and trend of brain stimulation technology in sleep disorder research. MATERIAL AND METHODS Articles and reviews published between 1999 and 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science. CiteSpace was used to visually analyze the publications, countries, institutions, journals, authors, references, and keywords. RESULTS A total of 459 publications were obtained. The number of studies was shown to be on a general upward trend. The country with the largest number of publications was the United States; UDICE-French Research Universities had the highest number of publications; Neurology had the highest citation frequency; 90% of the top 10 references cited were from Journal Citation Reports Q1; Brigo was the author with the highest number of publications; and the most frequent keywords were "transcranial magnetic stimulation", "deep brain stimulation", and "Parkinson disease". CONCLUSIONS Our study used CiteSpace software to analyze 459 studies published since 1999 on brain stimulation techniques for the treatment of sleep disorders, revealing research trends and the current state of the field. Our results will help researchers to understand the existing research quickly and provide direction for future research.

      Background: Cervical cancer is currently the second leading cause of death among women. However, there is a lack of effective treatment methods, and the existing treatments often result in significant adverse reactions and high chances of recurrence, which ultimately impact the prognosis of patients. As a result, the application of nanotechnology, specifically nanoparticle-based approaches, in the diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer has gained significant attention. This study aims to examine the current research status and future development trends of nanotechnology in relation to cervical cancer using a bibliometric perspective.Methods: A bibliometric analysis was performed to gather relevant research papers from the Web of Science database. VOSviewer and CiteSpace were utilized to conduct quantitative analysis and identify hot topics in the field, focusing on countries, institutions, journals, authors, and keywords.
    Result: A total of 997 eligible literature were retrieved. From January 1, 2014 to September 20, 2023, the overall number of publications showed an upward trend. The paper mainly comes from China (n=414). The main institution is the Chinese Academy of Sciences (n=62), and 60% of the top 10 institutions in the number of documents issued are from China. First authors Ma, Rong (n=12) and Alifu, Nuernisha (n=12). The journal with the highest publication volume is ACS Applied Materials&INTERFACES (n=35), and the journal with the highest citation frequency is BIOMATERIALS (n=508). "Nanoparticles (n=295)", "cervical cancer (n=248)", and "drug delivery (n=218)" are the top three most frequently occurring keywords. In recent years, photothermal therapy and indocyanine green have become research hotspots.
    Conclusion: The application of nanotechnology in the field of cervical cancer has garnered considerable attention. Nanoparticles-based methods for diagnosis, administration, and treatment have proven to be instrumental in enhancing the sensitivity of cervical cancer detection, improving the accuracy and efficiency of administration, and reducing drug toxicity. Enhancing treatment efficacy and improving patient prognosis have emerged as current research priorities and future directions.

      Background: With the rapid development of technology, artificial intelligence (AI) has been widely used in the diagnosis and prognosis prediction of a variety of diseases, including cardiovascular disease. Facts have proved that AI has broad application prospects in rapid and accurate diagnosis.Objective: This study mainly summarizes the research on the application of AI in the field of cardiovascular disease through bibliometric analysis and explores possible future research hotpots.
    Methods: The articles and reviews regarding application of AI in cardiovascular disease between 2000 and 2023 were selected from Web of Science Core Collection on 30 December 2023. Microsoft Excel 2019 was applied to analyze the targeted variables. VOSviewer (version 1.6.16), Citespace (version 6.2.R2), and a widely used online bibliometric platform were used to conduct co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analysis of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in this field.
    Results: A total of 4,611 articles were selected in this study. AI-related research on cardiovascular disease increased exponentially in recent years, of which the USA was the most productive country with 1,360 publications, and had close cooperation with many countries. The most productive institutions and researchers were the Cedar sinai medical center and Acharya, Ur. However, the cooperation among most institutions or researchers was not close even if the high research outputs. Circulation is the journal with the largest number of publications in this field. The most important keywords are "classification", "diagnosis", and "risk". Meanwhile, the current research hotpots were "late gadolinium enhancement" and "carotid ultrasound".
    Conclusions: AI has broad application prospects in cardiovascular disease, and a growing number of scholars are devoted to AI-related research on cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular imaging techniques and the selection of appropriate algorithms represent the most extensively studied areas, and a considerable boost in these areas is predicted in the coming years.

      Background: Brachial plexus injury is a common severe peripheral nerve injury with high disability. At present, the bibliometric analysis of brachial plexus injury is basically unknown.Methods: This article analyzes the data retrieved to the web of science and uses the R language (version 4.2), Citespace (version 6.1.R3 Advanced), Vosviewer (Lei deng university) to make a scientific map. Specifically, we analyze the main publication countries, institutions, journals where the article is published, and the cooperative relationship between different institutions, the relationship between authors, main research directions in this field, and current research hotspots.
    Results: From 1980 to 2022, the total number of publications is 1542. In terms of countries where articles were published, 551 records were published in the United States, accounting for 35% of the total. With 74 articles, Fudan University ranks first in the world in terms of the number of articles issued by the institution, followed by 72 articles from Mayo Clinic. The magazine with the largest number of articles is JOURNAL OF HAND SURGERY-AMERICAN VOLUME, which has published 87 articles in total. GU YD (Gu Yu-Dong) team (Fudan University) and spinner RJ (Robert J Spinner) team (Mayo clinic) are in a leading position in this field. Nerve transfer and nerve reconstruction have been a hot topic of brachial plexus injury. "Spinal nerve root repair and reimplantation of avulsed ventral roots into the spinal cord after brachial plexus injury" has the strongest citation bursts.
    Conclusion: Research on brachial plexus injury shows a trend of increasing heat. At present, there is a lack of communication and cooperation between scholars from different countries. Nerve transfer and nerve reconstruction are the current and future research directions in the treatment of brachial plexus injury.

      The aim of this study was to present current research trends on the synergistic use of radiotherapy and immunotherapy (IRT) for cancer treatment. On March 1, 2023, we conducted a literature search for IRT papers using the Web of Science database. We extracted information and constructed two databases - the Core Database (CD) with 864 papers and Generalized Database (GD) with 6344 papers. A bibliometric analysis was performed to provide insights into the research landscape, to identify emerging trends and highly cited papers and journals in the field of IRT. The CD contained 864 papers that were collectively cited 31,818 times. Prominent journals in this area included the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Corresponding authors from the USA contributed the most publications. In recent years, lung cancer, melanoma, stereotactic radiotherapy, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and the tumor microenvironment emerged as hot research areas. This bibliometric analysis presented quantitative insights into research concerning IRT and proposed potential avenues for further exploration. Moreover, researchers can use our findings to select appropriate journals for publication or identify prospective collaborators. In summary, this bibliometric analysis provides a comprehensive overview of the historical progression and recent advancements in IRT research that may serve as inspiration for future investigations.

      This extensive study provides a comprehensive overview of the contemporary research landscape about academic stress, emphasizing on identifying the most relevant contributors and understanding prevalent trends. The analysis included 5,375 results from the PubMed database and revealed a consistent upward trajectory with fluctuations in research paper publications over the years. Network analysis and visualization were performed using the Biblioshiny app and VOSviewer software. The analysis identified that the University of Oslo has published the highest number of research papers related to academic stress. In contrast, the Netherlands, the USA, and Australia demonstrated the highest frequency of collaboration. Analysis of keywords and their co-occurrence provides an overview of the research focus and the areas associated with psychological stress due to academics. Thematic evaluation and topic trend analysis provided insights into the evolving nature of research in academic stress. The thematic map depicts two categories of themes - motor themes, including psychological stress, its epidemiology, the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the mental health of university students, particularly those in medical programs; and emerging themes, including oxidative stress and risk factors, indicated evolving areas of interest. A notable observation was the scarcity of research on primary school students, signaling a gap in the existing academic stress literature. Citation analysis identified the most cited authors, countries, universities, and sources. This multifaceted examination provides a nuanced understanding of academic stress research's current state and dynamics, offering valuable insights into trends, collaborations, and thematic shifts that will guide future research in this critical field.

      OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to evaluate the scientific interest, the collaboration patterns and the emerging trends regarding HPV+ OPSCC diagnosis and treatment.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional bibliometric analysis of articles reporting on HPV+ OPSCC within Scopus database was performed and all documents published up to December 31th, 2022 were eligible for analysis. Outcomes included the exploration of key characteristics (number of manuscripts published per year, growth rate, top productive countries, most highly cited papers, and the most well-represented journals), collaboration parameters (international collaboration ratio and networks, co-occurrence networks), keywords analysis (trend topics, factorial analysis).
    RESULTS: A total of 5200 documents were found, published from March, 1987 to December, 2022. The number of publications increased annually with an average growth rate of 19.94%, reaching a peak of 680 documents published in 2021. The 10 most cited documents (range 1105-4645) were published from 2000 to 2012. The keywords factorial analysis revealed two main clusters: one on epidemiology, diagnosis, prevention and association with other HPV tumors; the other one about the therapeutic options. According to the frequency of keywords, new items are emerging in the last three years regarding the application of Artifical Intelligence (machine learning and radiomics) and the diagnostic biomarkers (circulating tumor DNA).
    CONCLUSIONS: This bibliometric analysis highlights the importance of research efforts in prevention, diagnostics, and treatment strategies for this disease. Given the urgency of optimizing treatment and improving clinical outcomes, further clinical trials are needed to bridge unaddressed gaps in the management of HPV+ OPSCC patients.

      BACKGROUND: Drowning is a worldwide problem. Scholarly publications about drowning prevention play a crucial role in bringing data to policy makers and prevention specialists. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of published articles related to unintentional drowning prevention included in the comprehensive, curated injury literature database, SafetyLit®.METHODS: Thorough searches of drowning-related search terms in English and non- English translations identified articles published in journals between 2000 and 2022.
    RESULTS: There was a 3-fold increase in publications between 2000 and 2022, with 2,937 articles published in 941 journals. Articles were published in 20 different languages. Five journals published 16% of the articles and sixty-one top journals published 50% of the articles. Eighty-nine percent of the top journals were included in PubMed; 82% were indexed in MEDLINE®; and professional areas of expertise of article authors spanned 18 categories.
    CONCLUSIONS: This study can facilitate journal selection for drowning researchers to ultimately increase the publication of scientific literature globally.

      Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is a multimodal perioperative management concept, but there is no article to comprehensively review the collaboration and impact of countries, institutions, authors, journals, references, and keywords on ERAS from a bibliometric perspective. This study assessed the evolution of clustering of knowledge structures and identified hot trends and emerging topics. Articles and reviews related to ERAS were retrieved through subject search from the Web of Science Core Collection. We used the following strategy: "TS = Enhanced recovery after surgery" OR "Enhanced Postsurgical Recovery" OR "Postsurgical Recoveries, Enhanced" OR "Postsurgical Recovery, Enhanced" OR "Recovery, Enhanced Postsurgical" OR "Fast track surgery" OR "improve surgical outcome". Bibliometric analyses were conducted on Excel 365, CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrics (R-Tool of R-Studio). Totally 3242 articles and reviews from 1997 to 2022 were included. These publications were mainly from 684 journals in 78 countries, led by the United States and China. Kehlet H published the most papers and had the largest number of co-citations. Analysis of the journals with the most outputs showed that most journals mainly cover Surgery and Oncology. The hottest keyword is "enhanced recovery after surgery". Later appearing topics and keywords indicate that the hotspots and future research trends include ERAS protocols for other types of surgery and improving perioperative status, including "bariatric surgery", "thoracic surgery", and "prehabilitation". This study reviewed the research on ERAS using bibliometric and visualization methods, which can help scholars better understand the dynamic evolution of ERAS and provide directions for future research.

      BACKGROUND: In the last decade, long-tail learning has become a popular research focus in deep learning applications in medicine. However, no scientometric reports have provided a systematic overview of this scientific field. We utilized bibliometric techniques to identify and analyze the literature on long-tailed learning in deep learning applications in medicine and investigate research trends, core authors, and core journals. We expanded our understanding of the primary components and principal methodologies of long-tail learning research in the medical field.METHODS: Web of Science was utilized to collect all articles on long-tailed learning in medicine published until December 2023. The suitability of all retrieved titles and abstracts was evaluated. For bibliometric analysis, all numerical data were extracted. CiteSpace was used to create clustered and visual knowledge graphs based on keywords.
    RESULTS: A total of 579 articles met the evaluation criteria. Over the last decade, the annual number of publications and citation frequency both showed significant growth, following a power-law and exponential trend, respectively. Noteworthy contributors to this field include Husanbir Singh Pannu, Fadi Thabtah, and Talha Mahboob Alam, while leading journals such as IEEE ACCESS, COMPUTERS IN BIOLOGY AND MEDICINE, IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MEDICAL IMAGING, and COMPUTERIZED MEDICAL IMAGING AND GRAPHICS have emerged as pivotal platforms for disseminating research in this area. The core of long-tailed learning research within the medical domain is encapsulated in six principal themes: deep learning for imbalanced data, model optimization, neural networks in image analysis, data imbalance in health records, CNN in diagnostics and risk assessment, and genetic information in disease mechanisms.
    CONCLUSION: This study summarizes recent advancements in applying long-tail learning to deep learning in medicine through bibliometric analysis and visual knowledge graphs. It explains new trends, sources, core authors, journals, and research hotspots. Although this field has shown great promise in medical deep learning research, our findings will provide pertinent and valuable insights for future research and clinical practice.

      Background:The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in telemedicine has been a popular topic in academic research in recent years, resulting in a surge of literature publications. This study provides a scientific overview of AI in telemedicine through bibliometric and visualization analysis.Methods:The Web of Science Core Collection was used as the data source, and the search was conducted on June 1, 2023. A total of 2,860 articles and review studies published in English between 2010 and 2023 were included. This study analyzed general information on the field, trends in publication output, countries/regions, authors, journals, influential articles, keyword usage, and knowledge flows between disciplines. The Bibliometrix R package, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace were used for the analysis.Results:The rate of articles published on AI in telemedicine is increasing by ∼42.1% annually. The United States and China are the top two countries in terms of the number of articles published, accounting for 37.1% of the overall publication volume. In addition to AI and telemedicine, machine learning, digital health, and deep learning are the top three keywords in terms of frequency of occurrence. The keyword time trend graph shows that ChatGPT became one of the important keywords in 2023. The analysis of burst detection suggests that mobile health, based on mobile phones, may be a promising area for future research.Conclusions:This study systematically reviewed the development of AI in telemedicine and identified current research hotspots and future research directions. The results will provide impetus for the innovative development of this field.

      Background: Achilles tendon injuries often generate substantial discussion in the mainstream media. The Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) measures the online dialogue pertaining to Achilles tendon research that occurs outside scientific journals, which traditional citation-based metrics fail to capture.Purpose: To characterize the top 100 most-cited Achilles tendon articles and compare them with the 100 Achilles tendon articles with the highest AAS. A secondary goal was to gain an improved understanding of the online dissemination and interpretation of Achilles tendon research through this comparison.
    Study Design: Cross-sectional study.
    Methods: The Web of Science Clarivate database was queried to isolate the 100 most-cited Achilles tendon articles, and the Altmetric database was queried to identify the Achilles tendon articles with the top 100 AAS values. Data elements were extracted for each article including study type, study topic, and geographic origin.
    Results: The Web of Science Clarivate database search yielded 10,890 articles published between 1970 and 2021. The 100 most-cited articles were published in 35 journals, with the American Journal of Sports Medicine being the most prevalent. The mean (±SD) number of citations was 214.5 ± 86.47. The most prevalent study type was laboratory (28.0%). The most prevalent study topic was treatment (41.0%). Of these articles, 72.0% were European. The Altmetric database search yielded 3810 articles published between 1957 and 2021. The AAS of the top 100 articles ranged from 37 to 476 with a mean of 98.17 ± 85.53. The selected articles were published in 39 journals, with the British Journal of Sports Medicine being the most prevalent. The most prevalent study type was randomized controlled trial (25.0%). The most common study topic was treatment (40.0%). Of these articles, 46.0% were European.
    Conclusion: Our findings suggest that, although the scientific community remains committed to high-impact journals with articles backed by high citation numbers, there is an increasing opportunity to consume Achilles tendon literature through social media.

      INTRODUCTION: Primary and secondary studies are considered the two major research categories. In this study, we examined the scientific and social media impact of primary and secondary publication types in papers published radiological journals during 2010-2020.MATERIALS AND METHODS: PubMed publication type tags were used to filter original articles and systematic review and meta-analysis (SR/MA) articles. Clarivate Web of Science was utilized to obtain a list of all radiology journals from the category "Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Imaging" in Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). Automated approach was developed for programmatic extraction of bibliometric and Altmetric yearly citations of each included article using Dimensions API and Altmetric API with Python. Statistical analysis was performed to compare the citation rates between primary and secondary research articles.
    RESULTS: A total of 96,684 published articles from 2010 to 2020 were identified and their meta-data collected. The mean 2-year citation count following publication year was 5.8 for primary research and 10.2 for SR/MA articles (p < 0.001). Between 2010 and 2020, the mean number of citations per SR/MA article was 51.3 compared to 30.5 per primary research article (p < 0.001). Mean Altmetric score was 8.2 in SR/MA compared to 3.7 for primary research articles (p < 0.001).
    CONCLUSION: Secondary research studies have been increasing in impact in both academia and social media compared to primary research. Our results highlight the importance and impact of systematic reviews and meta-analysis articles as a scientifically influential study type in radiology.

      Drug-eluting stents (DES) play a crucial role in treating coronary artery disease (CAD) by preventing restenosis. These stents are coated with drug carriers that release antiproliferative drugs within the vessel. Over the past two decades, DES have been employed in clinical practice using various materials, polymers, and drug types. Despite optimizations in their design and materials to enhance biocompatibility and antithrombotic properties, evaluating their long-term efficacy and safety necessitates improved clinical follow-up and monitoring. To delineate future research directions, this study employs a bibliometric analysis approach. We comprehensively surveyed two decades' worth of literature on DES for CAD using the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC). Out of 5,778 articles, we meticulously screened them based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subsequently, we conducted an in-depth analysis encompassing annual publication trends, authorship affiliations, journal affiliations, keywords, and more. Employing tools such as Excel 2021, CiteSpace 6.2R3, VOSviewer 1.6.19, and Pajek 5.17, we harnessed bibliometric methods to derive insights from this corpus. Analysis of annual publication data indicates a recent stabilisation or even a downward trend in research output in this area. The United States emerged as the leading contributor, with Columbia University and CRF at the forefront in both publication output and citation impact. The most cited document pertained to standardized definitions for clinical endpoints in coronary stent trials. Our author analysis identifies Patrick W. Serruys as the most prolific contributor, underscoring a dynamic exchange of knowledge within the field.Moreover, the dual chart overlay illustrates a close interrelation between journals in the "Medicine," "Medical," and "Clinical" domains and those in "Health," "Nursing," and "Medicine." Frequently recurring keywords in this research landscape include DES coronary artery disease, percutaneous coronary intervention, implantation, and restenosis. This study presents a comprehensive panorama encompassing countries, research institutions, journals, keyword distributions, and contributions within the realm of DES therapy for CAD. By highlighting keywords exhibiting recent surges in frequency, we elucidate current research hotspots and frontiers, thereby furnishing novel insights to guide future researchers in this evolving field.

      Research on artificial intelligence for brain injury is currently a prominent area of scientific research. A significant amount of related literature has been accumulated in this field. This study aims to identify hotspots and clarify research resources by conducting literature metrology visualization analysis, providing valuable ideas and references for related fields. The research object of this paper consists of 3000 articles cited in the core database of Web of Science from 1998 to 2023. These articles are visualized and analyzed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace. The bibliometric analysis reveals a continuous increase in the number of articles published on this topic, particularly since 2016, indicating significant growth. The United States stands out as the leading country in artificial intelligence for brain injury, followed by China, which tends to catch up. The core research institutions are primarily universities in developed countries, but there is a lack of cooperation and communication between research groups. With the development of computer technology, the research in this field has shown strong wave characteristics, experiencing the early stage of applied research based on expert systems, the middle stage of prediction research based on machine learning, and the current phase of diversified research focused on deep learning. Artificial intelligence has innovative development prospects in brain injury, providing a new orientation for the treatment and auxiliary diagnosis in this field.

      Background: Gender-affirming surgery is becoming more common among reconstructive surgeons. Bibliometric analyses are statistical evaluations of published scientific correspondence and are a validated method of measuring influence in the scientific community. As no such bibliometric analysis has been done as of yet, the purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the 50 most-cited peer-reviewed articles on gender-affirming surgery. Methods: The Scopus abstract and citation database was utilized in April 2020 to search for English-language publications related to gender-affirming surgery. The 50 most-cited publications that met inclusion criteria were reviewed for various metric tabulations. Results: The 50 publications have been cited a total of 4402 times. Thirty-one (62%) were published in 2000 or later. Phalloplasty was the most discussed surgical technique, and 18 of the articles focused on female-to-male (FtM) patients. Case series (46%) and review articles (24%) were most common and there were no Level I or Level II studies. The Netherlands contributed the most, with 13 articles. Among the most frequent keywords in the 50 abstracts were "flap" and "complication". The earliest author keywords used were "transsexual" and "sex reassignment". Conclusions: The keyword usage in these abstracts over time seems to follow the trend of a more socially inclusive lexicon. A focus on studies with a higher level of evidence may optimize surgeon education and more appropriately guide clinical practice. This study reveals that the most influential and commonly referenced studies may not be sufficient to appropriately guide clinical practices.

      Objective: To explore the current status and trends of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for multiple sclerosis through bibliometric and visual analyses of the related literature.Methods: Relevant literature from the Web of Science Core Collection from 2017 to 2022 was retrieved, and a bibliometric analysis was performed using CiteSpace 6.1. R2. Thesoftware was used to generate visual graphs of the author, institution, country, keyword co-occurrence, and literature co-citation network.
    Results: A total of 1719 manuscripts were retrieved, including 1397 original studies and 322 reviews. In the past five years, Patti F and the University of London were the authors and institutions generating the largest number of publications, respectively, and there was active collaboration between authors and institutions. The United States was the largest contributor to the relevant literature, and the high-frequency keywords in the field of multiple sclerosis disease-modifying therapies in the past five years mainly included multiple sclerosis, disease-modifying therapy, double-blind, disability, natalizumab, effectiveness, fingolimod, glatiramer acetate, and dimethyl fumarate.
    Conclusions: Current research hotspots and trends in DMTs in multiple sclerosis focus on the effectiveness of different DMTs drugs in treating patients with MS and how to optimise treatment strategies. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the correlation between MS and COVID-19 infection and the method to manage and address the adverse effects of DMTs on multiple sclerosis patients is also future research trends.

      Background: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are thought to play a key role in the microbe-gut-brain axis and involve in the pathogenesis of a variety of neurological diseases. This study aimed to identify research hotspots and evolution trends in SCFAs in central nervous diseases (CNS) and examine current research trends.Methods: The bibliometric analysis was performed using CiteSpace, and the results were visualized via network maps.
    Results: From 2002 to 2022, 480 publications in the database met the criteria. On the country level, China produced the highest number of publications, while the United States had the highest centrality. On the institutional level, University College Cork contributed to the most publications, and John F. Cryan from this university was the key researcher with considerable academic influence. The article, the role of short-chain fatty acids in microbiota-gut-brain, written by Boushra Dalile et al., in 2019 was the most cited article. Furthermore, the journal Nutrients had the maximum number of publications, while Plos One was the most cited journal. "Gut microbiome", "SCFAs", and "central nervous system" were the three most frequent keywords. Among them, SCFAs had the highest centrality. "Animal model" was the keyword with the highest burst strength, with the latest burst keywords being "social behavior", "pathogenesis", and "insulin sensitive". In addition, the research topics on SCFAs in CNS diseases from 2002 to 2022 mainly focused on following aspects: SCFAs plays a key role in microbe-gut-brain crosstalk; The classification and definition of SCFAs in the field of CNS; Several CNS diseases that are closely related to SCFAs research; Mechanism and translational studies of SCFAs in the CNS diseases. And the hotspots over the past 5 years have gradually increased the attention to the therapeutic potential of SCFAs in the CNS diseases.
    Conclusion: The research of SCFAs in CNS diseases is attracting growing attention. However, there is a lack of cooperation between countries and institutions, and additional measures are required to promote cooperation. The current evidence for an association between SCFAs and CNS diseases is preliminary and more work is needed to pinpoint the precise mechanism. Moreover, large-scale clinical trials are needed in the future to define the therapeutic potential of SCFAs in CNS diseases.

      In the last few years, the presence of geosmin (GEO) in water bodies has caused serious problems related to water consumption by the population. Many studies focus on its occurrence and detection, but little is discussed about the technologies for treatment and removal of this contaminant. In this way, the present work aims to present a bibliographic search and a bibliometric analysis carried out in the Web of Science database and in VOSviewer software about geosmin remediation, in the last 10 years. 100 articles were found, of which only one, from 2021, was a review. It was possible to assess that the subject has gained greater notoriety in the last 7 years, since the year 2016 marked the increase of publications on the subject, as well as an increasing number of citations. Among the most published countries is the People's Republic of China, with 53% of publications. Bibliometric analysis showed that GEO is directly related to 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), since both occur simultaneously in water bodies. In addition, it was possible to identify that adsorptive processes are the most used in the removal of these contaminants, followed by advanced oxidative processes and biological processes, in that order.

      Objective: Anisakis simplex is a fish-borne zoonotic parasite. Although this parasite has been known since the 19th century, publications on anisakiasis have increased in recent years. Despite this, this subject has yet to be well studied by bibliometric analysis. This study was conducted to show the research points and trends of A. simplex.Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was mined for articles on A. simplex. The VOSviewer software visually evaluated countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords in this field.
    Results: A total of 1362 publications were included in this bibliometric analysis. The included publications were published between 1970 and 2022 from 79 countries, mainly from Spain (n=456, 33.48%). The most prolific year was 2020 (n=74). The research area that attracted the most publications was parasitology (n=452), while the most productive author in this area was Cuellar C (n=53). "Anisakis simplex", "Anisakis" and "anisakiasis" were the most used three keywords.
    Conclusion: The number of publications on anisakiasis has been increasing over time, suggesting that A. simplex is becoming an increasingly important disease worldwide. Research cooperation should be established between researchers from developed and developing countries to determine effective control strategies for anisakiasis.

      In the Mediterranean diet, olive oil serves as the predominant fat source and has been linked to a decreased risk of mortality related to cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Still, there is no conclusive evidence correlating olive oil consumption to CVD. The aim of this study is to assess the global research, current research trends, and knowledge mapping related to the correlation between the consumption of olive oil and CVD using bibliometric analysis. On August 19, 2023, a title-specific literature search was conducted on the Scopus database using the search terms "olive oil" and "cardiovascular disease" with a date range of the past 50 years. Subsequently, bibliometric tools such as VOSviewer and Bibliometrix were employed to analyze and evaluate the obtained documents. The search yielded (n = 429) publications and showed an upward trend in the annual publication count over the last five decades. The publication number exhibited a gradual increase with a rate of 5.55%. The results also indicated that 2530 authors, 759 institutions, 47 countries, and 223 journals have publications in this research domain. The present bibliometric study will be a valuable research reference for describing the worldwide research patterns concerning the relationship between olive oil and CVD during the past 50 years. In the future, the application of olive oil for the treatment of CVDs may be an emerging research trend. Apart from this, collaborations among authors, countries, and organizations are expected.

      In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on bismuth tungstate (Bi2WO6) in the field of photocatalysis owing to its unique crystal structure and favorable bandgap. This study offers a comprehensive review of the research on Bi2WO6-based photocatalysts from 2007 to 2022 using bibliometric analysis. The analysis utilized the Web of Science Core Collection Database and encompassed a dataset of 2064 publications. The bibliometric analysis and science mapping were carried out using the bibliometix R-package and CiteSpace software. This analysis examined and discussed the network of relationships among countries, journals, organizations, authors, and keywords pertaining to the topic and subtopics under investigation. The findings demonstrate that China has played a significant role in this research area and has formed close collaborations with other countries. The identification of highly-cited emerging terms suggests that enhancing the photocatalytic performance of Bi2WO6-based nanomaterials is a primary research focus. Moreover, there has been increasing interest in exploring the synergistic effects of photocatalysis and adsorption as a means to improve catalytic efficiency. This study provides valuable insights for researchers seeking a deeper understanding of Bi2WO6-based photocatalysts.

      PURPOSE: Chimeric antigen receptor therapy beyond oncology has gained increasing attention. While a substantial number of publications have emerged in recent years, there has been a paucity of conducted bibliometric studies. Our objective is to systematically summarize and visually analyze the literature in the field of chimeric antigen receptors therapy beyond oncology and explore hotspots in this field.METHODS: Web of Science Core Collection was selected as the data source, and the data was retrieved on December 23, 2022, according to the search strategy. CiteSpace 6.1.R6 and Vosviewer 1.6.18 were used to analyze publications and explore research hotspots and directions.
    RESULTS: A total of 338 publications written by 1832 authors from 516 institutions in 42 countries/regions were selected for the analysis. The number of publications is steadily increasing annually. The United States emerged as the primary contributor, and University of Pennsylvania was the leading institution. Frontiers in Immunology boasted the highest number of published papers. Kitchen SG, Riley JL, and Scott DW were the most productive researchers in this field. The keyword cluster analysis identified HIV, autoimmune diseases, transplant related diseases and COVID-19 as the primary focus areas within the realm of chimeric antigen receptor therapy beyond oncology.
    CONCLUSION: The advancement of chimeric antigen receptor therapy beyond oncology has witnessed rapid progress in recent years. We have explored the hotspots and research directions in this field. It is hoped that this study could provide references and directions for future clinical researches.

      Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy (RC) remains the cornerstone of treatment for muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). While platinum-based regimens have demonstrated benefits in tumor downstaging and improved long-term survival for selected patients, they may pose risks for those who are ineligible or unresponsive to chemotherapy.Objective: We undertook a bibliometric analysis to elucidate the breadth of literature on NAC in bladder cancer, discern research trajectories, and underscore emerging avenues of investigation.
    Methods: A systematic search of the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) was conducted to identify articles pertaining to NAC in bladder cancer from 1999 to 2022. Advanced bibliometric tools, such as VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and SCImago Graphica, facilitated the examination and depicted the publication trends, geographic contributions, institutional affiliations, journal prominence, author collaborations, and salient keywords, emphasizing the top 25 citation bursts.
    Results: Our analysis included 1836 publications spanning 1999 to 2022, indicating a growing trend in both annual publications and citations related to NAC in bladder cancer. The United States emerged as the predominant contributor in terms of publications, citations, and international collaborations. The University of Texas was the leading institution in publication output. "Urologic Oncology Seminars and Original Investigations" was the primary publishing journal, while "European Urology" boasted the highest impact factor. Shariat, Shahrokh F., and Grossman, H.B., were identified as the most prolific and co-cited authors, respectively. Keyword analysis revealed both frequency of occurrence and citation bursts, highlighting areas of concentrated study. Notably, the integration of immunochemotherapy is projected to experience substantial growth in forthcoming research.
    Conclusions: Our bibliometric assessment provides a panoramic view of the research milieu surrounding neoadjuvant chemotherapy for bladder cancer, encapsulating the present state, evolving trends, and potential future directions, with a particular emphasis on the promise of immunochemotherapy.

      Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the trends in organoid culture research within the field of regenerative medicine from 2002 to 2022. Methods: The worldwide distribution of organoid research in regenerative medicine articles indexed in the Scopus database was analyzed. Result: A total of 840 documents were analyzed, averaging 42 publications annually. The USA (n = 296) led in publications, followed by China (n = 127), Japan (n = 91) and the UK (n = 75). Since 2011, research has surged, particularly in China, which emerged as a prominent center. Conclusion: The findings highlight significant growth in organoid research, promising future organ transplantation. Research trends integrate tissue engineering, gene modification and induced pluripotent stem cell technologies, reflecting a move toward personalized medicine.

      PURPOSE: The academic success of ophthalmology fellows may be significantly impacted by their research engagement. Evaluating the research activity of fellows by subspecialty may provide insight into trends useful for prospective applicants. The objective of this study was to assess the research activity of ophthalmology fellows in the year 2023.METHODS: Ophthalmology fellowship programs were compiled using the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery websites. Program subspecialties were categorized as: Cornea and External Disease [CED]; Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery [CEDRS]; Glaucoma; Medical Retina [MR]; Neuro-Ophthalmology [NO]; Oculoplastics; Pediatric Ophthalmology [PO]; Surgical Retina [SR]; Uveitis; and Other. "Other" consisted of Oncology, Pathology, combined Oncology and Pathology fellowships. We identified current fellows using publicly available online information. Programs and fellows that did not have information available were excluded. Total publications, Hirsch index (h-index), and weighted-relative citation ration (w-RCR) were utilized as measures of research output, while total citations and mean-RCR (m-RCR) served as proxies for research impact. Duration of publishing was calculated using the years of the oldest and most recent publications. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal-Wallis H tests with an alpha value of .05.
    RESULTS: A total of 373 fellows from 229 programs met our inclusion criteria. More than half of fellows were men (54.4%), and the most common degree type was MD (93.0%). Across all subspecialties, the median h-index was 3.0 (IQR = 4), m-RCR was .9 (IQR = 1.2) and w-RCR was 3.2 (IQR = 9.8). The median number of publications was six (IQR = 10, with 34 citations (IQR = 110) and 4 years of publishing (IQR = 6). We observed significant differences in h-index (p = .038), total publications (p < .001), and w-RCR (p = .028) by subspecialty.
    CONCLUSION: We observed significant differences in research output, but no differences in research impact by subspecialty. Overall, Uveitis and Oculoplastics fellows had higher research activity, while Medical Retina and Other fellows had the lowest. This data is pertinent to better understand the landscape of ophthalmology fellowship applications.

We created Scholar Metrics Scraper (SMS) to automate the retrieval of bibliometric data for a group of researchers. The project contains Jupyter notebooks that take a list of researchers as an input and exports a CSV file of citation metrics from Google Scholar (GS) to visualize the group's impact and collaboration. A series of graph outputs are also available. SMS is an open solution for automating the retrieval and visualization of citation data.

      BACKGROUND: As the dissemination of scientific knowledge pervades social media, appraising impact with traditional bibliometrics led to the creation of alternative metrics, termed altmetrics. Lacking existent foot and ankle surgery literature altmetric analysis, we analyzed the 10 most-cited articles in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association (JAPMA) and The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery (JFAS) in 2013 and 2017.METHODS: Citation count, Altmetric Attention Score (AAS), Mendeley Reads, and professional society-affiliated Twitter ages were collected and analyzed with descriptive statistics. Pearson correlation coefficient identified relationships between traditional and nontraditional metrics.
    RESULTS: The 40 articles showed a high median and large range in total citations for JAPMA (13.5 [range, 5-27]) and JFAS (28 [range, 5-69]). Media AAS Mendeley Reads also showed a high median with wide range for both JAPMA (32.5 [range, 0-135]) and JFAS (25 [range, 0-113)]. No significant correlation between total citations and AAS was seen in 2013 (r = -0.205; P = .388) or 2017 (r = -0.029; P = .903). The correlation between total citation count and Mendeley reads was significant in 2017 (r = 0.646; P = .002) but not in 2013 (r = -0.078; P = .744). Although cumulative AAS increased from 2013 to 2017 by 68.75%, with Twitter contributing most to both periods, there existed no significant correlation with Twitter age and the correlation coefficient between AAS and total citations (r = 0.655; P = .173).
    CONCLUSIONS: The results of this investigation show the utility and predictivity of alternative metrics in complementing traditional bibliometrics and encourage the promotion of publications through journal-specific social media.

      There is a need to analyze the trends of country-wise research output in child heath over the past few decades. A total of 7,87,812 global publications in pediatrics, perinatology and child health were found from 1996 to 2022 in SCOPUS, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, covering over 35,000 journals from diverse disciplines. About 13.4% of these were published from Asia. There was an average growth of global publications of 3.53 times between 1996 and 2022, with China and India showing higher growth than the global average.

      Background: There is a growing body of literature on complementary, alternative, and integrative medicine (CAIM), which offers a holistic approach to health and the maintenance of social and cultural values. Bibliometric analyses are an increasingly commonly used method employing quantitative statistical techniques to understand trends in a particular scientific field. The objective of this scoping review is to investigate the quantity and characteristics of evidence in relation to bibliometric analyses of CAIM literature. Methods: The following bibliographic databases will be searched: MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, AMED, CINAHL, Scopus and Web of Science. Studies published in English, conducting any type of bibliometric analysis involving any CAIM therapies, as detailed by an operational definition of CAIM adopted by Cochrane Complementary Medicine, will be included. Conference abstracts and study protocols will be excluded. The following variables will be extracted from included studies: title, author, year, country, study objective, type of CAIM, health condition targeted, databases searched in the bibliometric analysis, the type of bibliometric variables assessed, how bibliometric information was reported, main findings, conclusions, and limitations. Findings will be summarized narratively, as well as in tabular and graphical format. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this scoping review will be the first to investigate the characteristics of evidence in relation to bibliometric analyses on CAIM literature. The findings of this review may be useful to identify variations in the objectives, methods, and results of bibliometric analyses of CAIM research literature.

      OBJECTIVES: Gender equity studies have shown that women are underrepresented in journal editor in chief positions, which confer major professional opportunities and influence. We sought to systematically investigate editor in chief gender and journal attributes within pathology.METHODS: We constructed a journal data set using the Scimago Journal & Country Rank and Clarivate Journal Citation Reports databases. We also included official journals of the major medical societies for the 12 pathology subspecialties recognized by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The final data set included 126 journals. We obtained editor in chief gender, impact factor, publication model (ie, hybrid access vs open access), year of founding, and geographic location for all included pathology journals.
    RESULTS: Women made up only 18% of the 141 total editor in chief positions. This inequity was present irrespective of all pathology journal variables studied. Among 10 journals with 2 editor in chief positions, 5 had only men and 5 had 1 man and 1 woman. All 3 journals with 3 editor in chief positions had 2 men and 1 woman.
    CONCLUSIONS: Women are significantly underrepresented among editor in chiefs across pathology journals. Journals and affiliated members should advocate for diversity among these influential positions, given their impact on research, science, and medicine.

      Bariatric metabolic surgery's global research interest is growing, particularly in Asia due to its high obesity rates. This study focuses on Asia, especially China, analyzing 3904 publications (1221 from China) from 1980 to 2022. Research output accelerated until the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by economic growth and rising obesity rates. China led contributions from 2010, but Western Asia led when adjusted for population. An intra-regional research collaboration network emerged, driven by geographic proximity and similar economic environments. Keyword analysis highlighted emerging topics like "laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy" and "non-alcoholic fatty liver disease," indicating a shift in focus. The study recommends disseminating research in top-tier journals to enhance visibility and impact.

      Over the past decades, there has been ongoing effort to develop complex biomimetic tissue engineering strategies for in vitro cultivation and maintenance of organoids. The defined hydrogels can create organoid models for various organs by changing their properties and various active molecules. An increasing number of researches has been done on the application of hydrogels in organoids, and a large number of articles have been published on the topic. Although there have been existing reviews describing the application of hydrogels in the field of organoids, there is still a lack of comprehensive studies summarizing and analyzing the overall research trends in this field. The citation can be used as an indicator of the scientific influence of an article in its field.       The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly changed global practices of enterprise digital transformation (EDT). However, the impact of the pandemic on EDT research patterns remains unexplored. This study examines the overall development and research pattern shift of literature on EDT in the field of business and economics. A bibliometric analysis with CiteSpace was conducted on a total of 140 journal articles indexed the SSCI and SCIE databases on Web of Science prior to the pandemic and 621 articles published after the pandemic. The results suggest that following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significantly rapid growth of EDT-related publications, and the contributing role in EDT research of influential countries has undergone significant changes. Furthermore, the changes in keyword patterns were identified before and after the pandemic. Specifically, EDT research after the COVID-19 outbreak has been focusing on emerging topics, such as corporate governance, sustainable development, platform ecosystems, and dynamic capabilities. Finally, recommendations for future research are provided at individual, organizational, and ecosystem levels. Overall, this study is one of the first studies to uncover the dynamics of EDT research patterns due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, thus enhancing our understanding of the features and structures of digital transformation research in uncertain environment.

      BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This global bibliometric review aimed to investigate trends in publications relating to tinnitus and TMD.METHODS: A search was performed in eight databases (June/2022), by independent researchers with relevant keywords about tinnitus and TMD, without restriction of date or language. Original research or case report/series evaluating prevalence, association and risk related to tinnitus and TMD were included. Independent examiners selected studies by title and abstract and performed data extraction. Data about publication and researchers, study population, objective, study design and diagnostic criteria for tinnitus and TMD were exported to VintagePoint® for bibliometric analyses. Data about the direct association between tinnitus and TMD were extracted.
    RESULTS: One hundred and seventeen articles from 25 countries were included, most observational (68.4%) and evaluating association (N = 60; 44.8%). Among the 60 studies of association, 22 (36.6%) presented results of a direct association between the presence/absence of tinnitus and the presence/absence of TMD. Brazil (19.5%) and the United States (12.7%) were the countries with the most publications, and Dentistry (48.6%) was the main publication area. A growth in publications in Dentistry was observed in the past 30 years and in the past 10 years in Medicine. Half of the studies included the elderly population (50.2%). The main diagnostic criterion for both tinnitus (37.8%) and TMD (28%) was general questionnaires and/or self-report.
    CONCLUSION: There is a growing trend in publications relating to tinnitus and TMD, especially in Dentistry, with a predominance of observational and association studies in the elderly population using questionnaires and/or self-report. More research with robust diagnostic methods and other study designs should be encouraged in the future.

      Authors are often faced with the decision of whether to maximize traditional impact metrics or minimize costs when choosing where to publish the results of their research. Many subscription-based journals now offer the option of paying an article processing charge (APC) to make their work open. Though such "hybrid" journals make research more accessible to readers, their APCs often come with high price tags and can exclude authors who lack the capacity to pay to make their research accessible. Here, we tested if paying to publish open access in a subscription-based journal benefited authors by conferring more citations relative to closed access articles. We identified 146,415 articles published in 152 hybrid journals in the field of biology from 2013-2018 to compare the number of citations between various types of open access and closed access articles. In a simple generalized linear model analysis of our full dataset, we found that publishing open access in hybrid journals that offer the option confers an average citation advantage to authors of 17.8 citations compared to closed access articles in similar journals. After taking into account the number of authors, Journal Citation Reports 2020 Quartile, year of publication, and Web of Science category, we still found that open access generated significantly more citations than closed access (p < 0.0001). However, results were complex, with exact differences in citation rates among access types impacted by these other variables. This citation advantage based on access type was even similar when comparing open and closed access articles published in the same issue of a journal (p < 0.0001). However, by examining articles where the authors paid an article processing charge, we found that cost itself was not predictive of citation rates (p = 0.14). Based on our findings of access type and other model parameters, we suggest that, in the case of the 152 journals we analyzed, paying for open access does confer a citation advantage. For authors with limited budgets, we recommend pursuing open access alternatives that do not require paying a fee as they still yielded more citations than closed access. For authors who are considering where to submit their next article, we offer additional suggestions on how to balance exposure via citations with publishing costs.

      Background: The decrease in the frequency and duration of participation in leisure activities has negative effects on the physical, cognitive and psychological health of individuals. In this context, identifying the obstacles, which prevent individuals from participating in leisure activities, may offer important clues to institutions and organizations in taking measures to increase participation.Methods: The bibliometric analysis method was used in this study. The research was carried out with 306 articles scanned from the Web of Science (WoS) core database between 1991 and 2019.
    Results: Studies conducted in leisure area increased systematically according to 5-year periods and mostly authors from USA, Australia and Canada produced them. The mainstream subjects, which attracted the attention of researchers during recent years, are detected to be self-efficacy, segmentation, mental health and fear related to intrapersonal constraint topics.
    Conclusion: In order to cope with physical and mental health problems resulting from aging of the world population, and technological developments, and negative effects generated by inactive modern life style, priority should be given to studies on leisure constraints to be conducted on a more comprehensive basis. Another suggestion is to encourage health policies and applications which can increase participation in leisure activities.

      Recently, the h-index (HI) has been accepted as a globally valid indicator that measures the professional achievement of scientists. Although it has been criticized in some respects, it is the most frequently used parameter as a criterion that generally measures the number and quality of publications combined. In the evaluation of the scientific publication, apart from these, the duration (years) of professional experience of the scientist and the impact/significance of the author's contribution to publications should also be used; however, HI does not take these into account. In this article, we present our recommendations for a modified HI considering these two important parameters.

      Oxymatrine is a quinolizidine alkaloid mainly derived from Kushen; it possesses various therapeutic effects, such as organ- and tissue-protective, anticancer, and antiviral effects. The research directions for oxymatrine remain broad. In order to explore the overall status of oxymatrine-based research, we carried out a bibliometric analysis to summarize the oxymatrine-based, English-written studies published in the past 22 years. In total, 267 studies were included, most of which were original. The number of annual studies slowly increased with some fluctuations. Other than China, 11 different countries conducted studies on oxymatrine; the variety in the country of origin of these publications is presented as a recently increasing trend. Many affiliates and researchers have participated in oxymatrine-based research. Various treatment mechanisms involving different oxymatrine pathways have led to research in a wide range of fields, being published in numerous journals. Two particularly popular research fields related to oxymatrine involved anticancer and anti-inflammation. From this research, we concluded that with increasing and continuous in-depth studies, more therapeutic effects and mechanisms will be elucidated, and oxymatrine may present as a viable option for the treatment of additional diseases.

      INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to examine important points of focus, trends, and depth of research on non-pharmacological interventions for the management of labor pain worldwide from a macro perspective and present an extensive definition of research fields regarding non-pharmacological interventions.METHODS: Bibliometric methods were used in this study. With comprehensive keyword lists, the Web of Science and PubMed databases were searched using different screening strategies for publications made until 25 February 2023.
    RESULTS: Studies on non-pharmacological interventions in the management of labor pain have continued to develop since 2003 with great momentum. In this study, the most productive country in research on non-pharmacological interventions was found to be Iran, while Australia, the USA, China, and the United Kingdom were the most notable ones in terms of collaboration. The most prevalently studied non-pharmacological interventions were hydrotherapy and acupuncture. The results of the co-word analysis revealed 5 main themes about this field of research.
    CONCLUSION: The results of this study showed that interest in studies on non-pharmacological interventions in the management of labor pain has increased, the quality of research in the field is high, international collaboration is increasingly higher, and technological approaches have started to emerge in relevant studies.

      "Top 20" status on Doximity, an online networking service for medical professionals, is an indicator of the reputation of a residency program. The study assesses how training at a Top 20 (T20) orthopaedic residency program impacts career productivity and funding. Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database was used in 2022 to identify active orthopaedic residency programs. Demographic and training data was collected for each orthopaedic surgeon using institutional websites and Doximity. The Residency Navigator feature on Doximity was used to rank residency programs by "reputation." Programs were categorized as either T20 or non-T20. The relative citation ratio (RCR) was calculated using the NIH iCite tool and Hirsch index (h-index) was calculated using Scopus. Industry funding was collected from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Open Payments Program (CMS) for all available years (2014-2020). A total of 2812 academic orthopaedic surgeons were included in the study. Among academic orthopaedic surgeons in the United States, T20 trained orthopedists had more publications and citations (p < 0.001), along with higher h-indices (p < 0.001), RCR (p < 0.001), and industry funding (p = 0.043). Additionally, T20 trained orthopedists were 1.375 times more likely to obtain professor status (95% confidence interval: 1.150-1.645, p < 0.001). Even after propensity-matched analysis, T20 trained orthopedists maintained these differences. Training at a T20 residency program is associated with promotion, productivity, and funding. These findings are especially of concern to medical students who must consider the importance of a residency program's reputation when deciding where to apply for residency.

      Gliomas are the most prevalent primary malignant brain tumors worldwide, with glioblastoma (GBM) being the most common and aggressive type. The standard therapy for GBM has remained unchanged for nearly two decades, with no significant improvement in survival outcomes. Despite several barriers such as the tumor microenvironment (TME) and blood-brain barrier, immunotherapies bring new hope for the treatment of GBM. To better understand the development and progress of immunotherapies in GBM, we made this scientometric analysis of this field. A total of 3753 documents were obtained from the Web of Science Core Collection, with publication years ranging from 1999 to 2022. The Web of Science platform, CiteSpace, and VOS viewer were used to conduct the scientometric analysis. The results of scientometric analysis showed that this field has recently become a popular topic of interest. The United States had the most publications among 89 countries or regions. Keyword analysis indicated significant areas in the field of immunotherapies for GBM, especially TME, immune checkpoint blockades (ICBs), chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells, vaccines, and oncolytic viruses (OVs). Overall, we hope that this scientometric analysis can provide insights for researchers and promote the development of this field.

      This study aims to contribute to the promising field of alkali-activated materials (AAM) used in 3D printing for construction. Presented as a comprehensive review, the research provides valuable insights for researchers within and beyond the field. The study focuses on identifying prevalent research trends and accessing pertinent information on materials, methodologies, and parameters of interest. The study commenced with a bibliometric analysis of 55 carefully selected publications, followed by an in-depth review of these articles categorized into extrusion-based and powder-based systems. Emphasis was placed on the materials used, methodologies employed, and key findings from these studies. The bibliometric analysis unveiled prevalent keywords, their relevance in the field, highly cited articles, and collaborative networks among researchers. The most influential countries in terms of publications are Australia, China, and Singapore. The review highlighted commonly used materials and their potential impacts on large-scale applications of AAM, exploring how various precursors, activators, additives, aggregates, and reinforcements shape the properties of printed AAM, featuring innovative approaches with alternative materials. The methodologies employed in these studies and trends in characterization were outlined, due to the absence of standardized tests for materials in 3D printing applications. The study emphasized how material properties vary concerning production processes, printing parameters, curing methods, and post-treatment, outlining advancements in material characterization necessary for achieving a printable mix design. Through the analysis of these 55 articles, key scientific challenges and hurdles in large-scale applications were identified, suggesting potential focal points for further studies. In summary, AAMs exhibit substantial uniqueness and complexity due to their diverse material composition, resulting in varying properties in both fresh and hardened states. However, this diversity also signifies the adaptability of AAMs to diverse equipment, construction techniques, and desired specifications, showcasing their potential to revolutionize traditional construction by integrating technology and sustainability.

      The future of physiology has been a recurrent concern for physiologists and Physiological Societies within post-Bologna Europe and the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). Our paper provides an overview of Physiology teaching and research in Portugal, an EU member state and part of the EHEA. A descriptive study was designed to analyze data publicly available from the National Higher Education Directorate agency (DGES) from September to November 2022 to find all Portuguese syllabi containing at least one discipline related to human Physiology. A detailed database was established, including teaching staff, with a total of 365 courses/degrees and 764 Physiology disciplines. A bibliometric analysis of the identifiable lecturers' scientific production between 2017 and 2022 was made using Web of Science and PUBMED databases. Physiology is part of all health-related professions. However, universities and technical colleges differ greatly in programs, staff backgrounds, and scientific profiles. Medical schools were found to provide the most complete formation. Noteworthy, the profession of Physiologist has practically no expression within the EHEA, compared with the USA-UK realities. A better knowledge and understanding of these Physiology modalities in teaching and research within the EHEA will be instrumental to defining a stronger identity for European Physiology in the near future.

      Objective To visualize the research status and hotspots of women's common disease screening based on CiteSpace 6.1.R6,and to provide a reference for the in-depth research in this field thereafter. Methods The relevant articles were retrieved from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure with the time interval from January 1,1992 to December 13,2022.The analysis was conducted on the number of annual publications,countries(regions),institutions,author collaboration networks,keyword co-occurrence,clustering,and bursts. Results A total of 900 papers that met the criteria were included,and the number of annual publications showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing.The cross-institutional collaboration network was mature.The research hotspots mainly covered women's health,the prevalence of women's diseases,reproductive health,and breast diseases.The hotspots have evolved from an initial focus on reproductive health care to gynecological disease management,and eventually to reproductive health and holistic health care in women. Conclusions The attention should be kept on the screening of women's common diseases.It is advisable to synchronize the screening of women's common diseases with the screening of cervical and breast cancers to expand the screening coverage,promote early disease detection and treatment,and comprehensively safeguard women's health.

      Despite the rapid growth in the number of scientific publications, our understanding of author publication trajectories remains limited. Here we propose an embedding-based framework for tracking author trajectories in a geometric space that leverages the information encoded in the publication sequences, namely the list of the consecutive publication venues for each scholar. Using the publication histories of approximately 30,000 social media researchers, we obtain a knowledge space that broadly captures essential information about periodicals as well as complex (inter-)disciplinary structures of science. Based on this space, we study academic success through the prism of movement across scientific periodicals. We use a measure from human mobility, the radius of gyration, to characterize individual scholars' trajectories. Results show that author mobility across periodicals negatively correlates with citations, suggesting that successful scholars tend to publish in a relatively proximal range of periodicals. Overall, our framework discovers intricate structures in large-scale sequential data and provides new ways to explore mobility and trajectory patterns.

      OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether the research output of medical students who matched into a Canadian ophthalmology residency program influences their subsequent research productivity during residency, decision to pursue a fellowship, or engagement in academic practice.DESIGN: Retrospective database review.
    PARTICIPANTS: A total of 369 trainees commencing ophthalmology residency from 2004 to 2015 at 15 residency programs.
    METHODS: Each trainee's publication record was queried in Scopus before and after the date they started residency. Multiple public sources were searched to identify fellowship placement and the type of subsequent practice (i.e., academic or community). Predictors of research productivity during residency, fellowship, and practice setting were assessed using multivariable regression analyses.
    RESULTS: Trainees with pre-residency publications (n = 187) demonstrated significantly higher research productivity during residency than those without pre-residency publications (n = 182), with a mean of 5.17 ± 5.97 versus 1.60 ± 2.38 publications on any topic (p < 0.001). Pre-residency research output was a predictor of research productivity during residency (relative risk = 1.17; 95% CI, 1.09-1.27; p < 0.001), pursuing fellowship (odds ratio, 2.9; 95% CI, 1.74-4.83), and an academic career (odds ratio = 1.85; 95% CI, 1.07-3.2).
    CONCLUSION: Pre-residency research output is a significant predictor of research productivity during residency and subsequent career choices, suggesting that pre-residency publishing reflects a propensity toward an academic trajectory. Residency publication count moderates this association, underscoring the role of the residency program environment in fostering research productivity. Addressing barriers such as mentorship, funding, and curriculum may be key to incentivizing trainees to pursue academic medicine.

      Social Network Analysis (SNA) is a modeling technique and analytical approach well-suited for identifying and examining the structural features of supply networks and the patterns of connections between members within the network. This paper aims to present a systematic review and bibliometric analysis by investigating network structural properties and metrics in supply chain management (SCM) research. The approach involved combining a systematic literature review with a bibliometric analysis, forming a two-part methodology to examine 113 articles published between 2008 and 2023 in 62 journals. Our systematic thematic analysis reveals how SCM researchers have applied SNA techniques in terms of the reported node-level and network-level structural metrics, including network configuration description metrics, centrality measures, supply network subgroups, and models of supply network structure and formation. We identify the gaps in the existing body of literature and propose potential directions for future research. By quantitatively analyzing, classifying, and visualizing bibliographic data of previous studies, this paper provides further insights into the application of network structural properties in SCM research. Furthermore, our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the significance of the supply network's relational structure and configuration. Considering the disruptions to global supply chains caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukrainian War, our findings can contribute to a better understanding of strategic supply network design.

      Background: Research experience is mandatory for all Orthopaedic Surgery residency programs. Although the allocation of required protected time and resources varies from program to program, the underlying importance of research remains consistent with mutual benefit to both residents and the program and faculty. Authorship and publications have become the standard metric used to evaluate academic success. This study aimed to determine if there is a correlation between the research productivity of Orthopaedic Surgery trainees and their subsequent research productivity as attending Orthopaedic Surgeons.Methods: Using the University of Mississippi Orthopaedic Residency Program Research Productivity Rank List, 30 different Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Programs were analyzed for the names of every graduating surgeon in their 2013 class. PubMed Central was used to screen all 156 physicians and collect all publications produced by them between 2008 and August 2022. Results were separated into two categories: Publications during training and Publications post-training.
    Results: As defined above, 156 Surgeons were analyzed for publications during training and post-training. The mean number of publications was 7.02 ± 17.819 post-training vs. 2.47 ± 4.313 during training, P < 0.001. The range of publication post-training was 0-124 vs. 0-30 during training. Pearson correlation between the two groups resulted in a value of 0.654, P < 0.001.
    Conclusion: Higher research productivity while training correlates to higher productivity post-training, but overall Orthopaedic surgeons produce more research after training than during. With the growing importance of research, more mentorship, time, and resources must be dedicated to research to instill and foster greater participation while in training.

      Worldwide women have increased their participation in STEM, but we are still far from reaching gender parity. Although progress can be seen at the bachelor's and master's level, career advancement of women in research still faces substantial challenges leading to a 'leaky pipeline' phenomenon (i.e., the continuous decrease of women's participation at advanced career stages). Latin America exhibits encouraging rates of women participation in research, but the panorama varies across countries and stages in the academic ladder. This study focuses on women's participation in research in natural sciences in Colombia and investigates career progression, leadership roles, and funding rates by analyzing data on scholarships, grants, rankings, and academic positions. Overall, we found persistent gender imbalances throughout the research ecosystem that were significant using classical statistical analyses. First, although women constitute >50% graduates from bachelors in natural sciences, <40% of researchers in this field are female. Second, women win <30% of research grants, and in turn, their scientific productivity is 2X lower than that of men. Third, because of the less research funding and output women have, their promotion to senior positions in academic and research rankings is slower. In consequence, only ~25% of senior researchers and full professors are women. Fourth, the proportion of women leading research groups and mentoring young scientist in Colombia is <30%. Our study deepens our understanding of gender gaps in STEM research in Colombia, and provides information to design initiatives that effectively target gender disparities by focusing on key areas of intervention, and then gradually building up, rather than tackling structural inequities all at once.

      INTRODUCTION: Fellowship directors (FDs) hold significant leadership roles within the academic urology community. We sought to characterize common trends in training and academic productivity among urology FDs. Moreover, we aimed to characterize gender differences across subspecialties to better inform gender-based inclusion efforts and contemporary leadership pathways.METHODS: FDs were studied across 6 urologic subspecialties. Society and institutional websites were queried for demographics, education/training institutions, timelines of career milestones, and academic productivity. Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U, and Kruskal-Wallis tests and Kendall's tau rank correlation were employed with an alpha cutoff of 0.05.
    RESULTS: There were 219 FDs included, representing 208 fellowship programs at 93 institutions. FDs were 176 (80%) males and 43 (20%) females. There was a significant association between gender and subspecialty. The median age for all FDs was 52 years old. Significant differences in age were demonstrated across subspecialties. For all FDs, females were younger than males, at 49 and 53 years, respectively (P = .001). The median H-index for all FDs was 23.5. H-index was significantly different between genders and subspecialities. There was a strong, positive correlation between age and H-index for all FDs. Half of FDs had completed fellowship training at one of 14 institutions.
    CONCLUSIONS: We describe the landscape of leadership in urology subspecialty training. There are an increasing number of female FDs. Composition of leadership varies by subspecialty; however, the careers of all current urology FDs are marked by lifelong achievements in academic productivity. Moreover, a small group of institutions consistently produce FDs.

      PURPOSE: To investigate the degree of perceived publication pressure in medical imaging.METHOD: Corresponding authors who published an article in one of the top 12 general radiology journals were invited to complete a survey about publication pressure. The revised Publication Pressure Questionnaire (PPQr) was used. Higher PPQr scores (5-point Likert scale) indicate a more negative view towards the various domains of publication pressure.
    RESULTS: 203 corresponding authors participated. Median PPQr scores in the domains "publication stress", "publication attitude", and "publication resources" were 3.33, 3.50, and 3.67, respectively. Age 25-34 years (β coefficient 0.366, P = 0.047), female gender (β coefficient 0.293, P = 0.020), and 5-10 years of research experience (β coefficient 0.370, P = 0.033) were associated with a higher level of perceived publication stress, whereas age ≥ 65 years was negatively associated with perceived publication stress (β coefficient -0.846, P < 0.001). Age 55-64 years and age > 65 years were associated with a more positive view towards the publication climate (β coefficients -0.391 and -0.663, P = 0.018 and P = 0.002, respectively). Age 45-54 years was associated with a perception of fewer factors available to alleviate publication pressure (β coefficient 0.301, P = 0.014), whereas age 25-34 years was associated with a perception of more factors available to alleviate publication pressure (β coefficient -0.352, P = 0.012).
    CONCLUSION: Perceived publication pressure among medical imaging researchers appears to be appreciable and is associated with several (academic) demographics.

      INTRODUCTION: Research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the majority of global tobacco users reside, is critical to addressing the global tobacco epidemic. This analysis describes the global tobacco control research portfolio funded by the National Cancer Institute from fiscal years 2000 to 2019.METHODS: We used the National Institutes of Health Query, View, Report database to identify extramural grants relevant to global tobacco control research. Abstracts were analyzed to describe grant characteristics, including topic areas, tobacco products, countries, and regions of focus. Bibliometric and co-authorship network analyses were performed for publications associated with relevant grants.
    RESULTS: Of the 93 relevant grants with foreign (non-US) involvement, the majority (83.9%) supported research in upper and lower middle-income countries. The majority of grants (86.0%) focused on cigarettes, with a small subset of grants addressing smokeless tobacco, waterpipe use, or other non-cigarette products. Most grants focused on at least one of the six tobacco control policy measures in the World Health Organization MPOWER package; almost half (48.4%) focused on monitoring tobacco use and around one-third (32.3%) focused on offering tobacco cessation treatment, while other MPOWER measures received less attention in the research portfolio. While most of these grants, and the funding initiatives that supported them, emphasized research in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), only 3 of 93 grants were awarded directly to LMIC-based institutions.
    CONCLUSIONS: There is a critical need for research to develop and test strategies to adapt, implement, and scale up evidence-based interventions across diverse LMIC settings. This study identified gaps in research activity that should be addressed to strengthen global tobacco control research capacity.

      OBJECTIVE: To identify factors related to research success for academic surgeons.SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Many recognize mounting barriers to scientific success for academic surgeons, but little is known about factors that predict success for individual surgeons.
    METHODS: A phase 1 survey was emailed to department chairpersons at highly funded US departments of surgery. Participating chairpersons distributed a phase 2 survey to their faculty surgeons. Training- and faculty-stage exposures and demographic data were collected and compared with participant-reported measures of research productivity. Five primary measures of productivity were assessed including number of grants applied for, grants funded, papers published, first/senior author papers published, and satisfaction in research.
    RESULTS: Twenty chairpersons and 464 faculty surgeons completed the survey, and 444 faculty responses were included in the final analysis. Having a research-focused degree was significantly associated with more grants applied for (PhD, incidence rate ratio (IRR)=6.93; masters, IRR=4.34) and funded (PhD, IRR=4.74; masters, IRR=4.01) compared to surgeons with only clinical degrees (all P<0.01). Having a formal research mentor was significantly associated with more grants applied for (IRR=1.57, P=0.03) and higher satisfaction in research (IRR=2.22, P<0.01). Contractually protected research time was significantly associated with more grants applied for (IRR=3.73), grants funded (IRR=2.14), papers published (IRR=2.12), first/senior authors published (IRR=1.72), and research satisfaction (Odds ratio=2.15) (all P<0.01). The primary surgeon-identified barrier to research productivity was lack of protection from clinical burden.
    CONCLUSIONS: Surgeons pursuing research-focused careers should consider the benefits of attaining a research-focused degree, negotiating for contractually protected research time, and obtaining formal research mentorship.

      Objective: We present the evolution of medical imaging software and its impact on the medical imaging community through the study of four open-source image analysis software platforms: 3D Slicer, FreeSurfer, FSL, and SPM. Materials and methods: We have studied the impact of these software tools over time, measured by the number of scientific citations. Additionally, we have also studied the source code evolution by measuring the lines of code and the tarball size of the stable releases and the changes in programming languages. Results and discussion: The rising number of related scientific publications confirms the popularity of these software tools in the research community, albeit some differences can be observed in the popularity of the tools. Moreover, we demonstrate that source code has evolved to modernize and optimize, at least partially thanks to the collaboration and code sharing with the user community. Furthermore, this evolution reveals an increased use of higher-level programming languages and meta-languages. Conclusions: The study of four open-source packages has revealed certain patterns in the evolution of medical imaging software and their impact on the medical image community. Further analyses and complementary metrics are suggested.

      OBJECTIVE: A biomaterial is any non-pharmaceutical substance or a mixture of synthetic or natural substances used independently or as part of a system for any amount of time with the aim of mending, supporting the growth, or replacing tissues, organs, or functions of the body. It is a non-renewable material that interacts with biological systems. The purpose of this study was to assess the advances in ceramic biomaterials and perform a bibliometric mapping of the literature on the subject.MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Scopus database was used for manuscript screening (Elsevier, Amsterdam, The Netherlands). The effect of the scientific production has been assessed using scientometric citational metrics.
    RESULTS: A total of 2,554 pieces of literature, including 2,234 papers, 170 conference proceedings, 109 reviews, 35 book chapters, 3 editorial letters, and 3 short surveys, were retrieved. Based on the research conducted, it is noted that ceramic materials are high-performing by being porous or glassy and can, therefore, serve as fillers, covering materials, and scaffolds in medicine and biotechnology. They are frequently employed not only in orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery but also in dentistry for dental prostheses.
    CONCLUSIONS: Materials monitoring methods enable us to track the three-dimensional evolution of ceramics' volume, as well as flaws or micro-cracks.

      The past 20 years has seen a significant increase in articles with 500 or more authors. This increase has presented problems in terms of determining true authorship versus other types of contribution, issues with database metadata and data output, and publication length. Using items with 500+ authors deemed as mega-author titles, a total of 5,533 mega-author items were identified using InCites. Metadata about the items was then gathered from Web of Science and Scopus. Close examination of these items found that the vast majority of these covered physics topics, with medicine a far distant second place and only minor representation from other science fields. This mega-authorship saw significant events that appear to correspond to similar events in the Large Hadron Collider's timeline, indicating that the projects for the collider are driving this heavy output. Some solutions are offered for the problems resulting from this phenomenon, partially driven by recommendations from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.

      Despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, the concept of 'race' as a biological unit continues to persist in various scientific disciplines, notably in the field of medicine. This paper explores the persistence of 'race as biology' in medical research via examining select citational practices that have perpetuated this problematic concept. Citations serve as a cornerstone in scientific literature, signifying reliability and expert affirmation. By analyzing citation threads and historical patterns, we aim to shed light on the creation and perpetuation of false scientific truths and their impact on medical research, training, and practice. We focus on two prominent examples, eGFR and Spirometry, and trace key articles' citational histories, highlighting the flawed evidence in support of racial corrections in medical assessments. The eGFR equation incorporates 'race' as a factor based on the erroneous belief that Black individuals have higher muscle mass than white individuals. Our analysis reveals that key cited sources for this belief lack robust and well-developed datasets. Similarly, Spirometry measurements incorporate racial correction factors, relying on questionable evidence dating back to the Civil War era. Citations serve as a cornerstone in scientific literature, signifying reliability and expert affirmation. They play a crucial role in shaping theoretical positions and validating data and assumed knowledge. Evaluating citation threads and key articles consistently referenced over time can reveal how falsehoods and erroneous assertions are constructed and maintained in scientific fields. This study underscores the need for critical examination of citational practices in medical research and urges a shift toward a more cautious approach when citing sources that support 'race as biology.' The paper calls for a reevaluation of pedagogical approaches and assigned readings in medical education to prioritize an anti-racist perspective in future research endeavors.

      Nanotechnology has grown in importance in medicine, manufacturing, and consumer products. Nanoparticles (NPs) are also widely used in the field of insect pest management, where they show a variety of toxicological effects on insects. As a result, the primary goal of this review is to compile and evaluate available information on effects of NPs on insects, by use of a timely, bibliometric analysis. We also discussed the manufacturing capacity of NPs from insect tissues and the toxic effects of NPs on insects. To do so, we searched the Web of Science database for literature from 1995 to 2023 and ran bibliometric analyses with CiteSpace© and Bibliometrix©. The analyses covered 614 journals and identified 1763 relevant documents. We found that accumulation of NPs was one of the top trending topics. China, India, and USA had the most published papers. The most overall reported models of insects were those of Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito), Culex quinquefasciatus (southern house mosquito), Bombyx mori (silk moth), and Anopheles stephensi (Asian malaria mosquito). The application and methods of fabrication of NPs using insect tissues, as well as the mechanism of toxicity of NPs on insects, were also reported. A uniform legal framework is required to allow nanotechnology to fully realize its potential while minimizing harm to living organisms and reducing the release of toxic metalloid nanoparticles into the environment.

      BACKGROUND: This study investigated the trends, motivations and preferences of rhinoplasty in China.METHODS: Data on rhinoplasty were collected from Xiaohongshu and analyzed for trends. Text analysis and word frequency statistics were performed on the notes and comments using Python modules.
    RESULTS: We obtained 1065 notes with 102,153 comments, 239,383 collections and 640,579 likes. The number of rhinoplasty-related publications increased annually, correlating with per capita disposable income of households (DI) growth (r2 = 0.609, P = 0.041 < 0.05). In the Southern provinces, there was a notably higher volume of publications compared to the Northern provinces (P = 0.001). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between publication data, population size, and the DI (r2 = 0.786, P < 0.001). The nasal tip (3197) and nasion (1409) were the most mentioned nasal subunits. "Good-looking" (9672) and "natural" (2811) were the most used words to describe the nose shape. The "doctor" (4377), the "hospital" (2182) and "hyaluronic acid" (2106) were the most mentioned rhinoplasty procedure related vocabulary.
    CONCLUSIONS: Discussions about rhinoplasty in China are increasing, and more people express their desire for rhinoplasty on social networks, related to China's DI growth. The Southern provinces show a higher inclination toward these discussions, a trend that correlates with our findings of a positive association between NOPs and both DI and population size. Netizens pay more attention to the shape of nasal tip and nasion, and prefer the good-looking and natural appearance. Most people consider autologous cartilage or hyaluronic acid injection for rhinoplasty. Doctors are the primary consideration for patients.

      BACKGROUND: Industry sponsorship is an important source of funding for atrial fibrillation (AF) clinical trials, the implications of which have not been analyzed.OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics of contemporary AF clinical trials and to evaluate their association with funding source.
    METHODS: We systematically assessed all completed AF trials registered in the ClinicalTrials.gov database between conception to October 31, 2023, and extracted publicly available information including funding source, trial size, demographic distribution, intervention, location, and publication status. Trial characteristics were compared using the Wilcoxon rank sum test and Fisher's exact test for continuous and categorical variables, respectively.
    RESULTS: Of the 253 clinical trials assessed, 171 (68%) reported industry funding. Industry funding was associated with a greater median number of patients enrolled (172 vs. 80; P < 0.001), publication rate (56.7% vs. 42.7%; P = 0.04), probability of being product-focused (48.0% vs. 24.4%; P < 0.001), and multicontinental recruitment location (25.2% vs. 2.4%; P < 0.001) when compared to non-industry funded trials. However, industry funding was not associated with a significant difference in median impact factor (7.7 vs. 7.7; P = 0.723). The overall proportion of industry funded trials did not change over time (P = 1.00).
    CONCLUSION: Industry funded clinical trials in AF are often larger, more frequently published, multicontinental, and product-focused. Industry funding was found to be associated with significant differences in study enrollment and publication metrics.

      BACKGROUND: Research gaps refer to unanswered questions in the existing body of knowledge, either due to a lack of studies or inconclusive results. Research gaps are essential starting points and motivation in scientific research. Traditional methods for identifying research gaps, such as literature reviews and expert opinions, can be time consuming, labor intensive, and prone to bias. They may also fall short when dealing with rapidly evolving or time-sensitive subjects. Thus, innovative scalable approaches are needed to identify research gaps, systematically assess the literature, and prioritize areas for further study in the topic of interest.OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we propose a machine learning-based approach for identifying research gaps through the analysis of scientific literature. We used the COVID-19 pandemic as a case study.
    METHODS: We conducted an analysis to identify research gaps in COVID-19 literature using the COVID-19 Open Research (CORD-19) data set, which comprises 1,121,433 papers related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our approach is based on the BERTopic topic modeling technique, which leverages transformers and class-based term frequency-inverse document frequency to create dense clusters allowing for easily interpretable topics. Our BERTopic-based approach involves 3 stages: embedding documents, clustering documents (dimension reduction and clustering), and representing topics (generating candidates and maximizing candidate relevance).
    RESULTS: After applying the study selection criteria, we included 33,206 abstracts in the analysis of this study. The final list of research gaps identified 21 different areas, which were grouped into 6 principal topics. These topics were: "virus of COVID-19," "risk factors of COVID-19," "prevention of COVID-19," "treatment of COVID-19," "health care delivery during COVID-19," "and impact of COVID-19." The most prominent topic, observed in over half of the analyzed studies, was "the impact of COVID-19."
    CONCLUSIONS: The proposed machine learning-based approach has the potential to identify research gaps in scientific literature. This study is not intended to replace individual literature research within a selected topic. Instead, it can serve as a guide to formulate precise literature search queries in specific areas associated with research questions that previous publications have earmarked for future exploration. Future research should leverage an up-to-date list of studies that are retrieved from the most common databases in the target area. When feasible, full texts or, at minimum, discussion sections should be analyzed rather than limiting their analysis to abstracts. Furthermore, future studies could evaluate more efficient modeling algorithms, especially those combining topic modeling with statistical uncertainty quantification, such as conformal prediction.

      Introduction: Digital accessibility involves designing digital systems and services to enable access for individuals, including those with disabilities, including visual, auditory, motor, or cognitive impairments. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance accessibility for people with disabilities and improve their overall quality of life.Methods: This systematic review, covering academic articles from 2018 to 2023, focuses on AI applications for digital accessibility. Initially, 3,706 articles were screened from five scholarly databases-ACM Digital Library, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Springer.
    Results: The analysis narrowed down to 43 articles, presenting a classification framework based on applications, challenges, AI methodologies, and accessibility standards.
    Discussion: This research emphasizes the predominant focus on AI-driven digital accessibility for visual impairments, revealing a critical gap in addressing speech and hearing impairments, autism spectrum disorder, neurological disorders, and motor impairments. This highlights the need for a more balanced research distribution to ensure equitable support for all communities with disabilities. The study also pointed out a lack of adherence to accessibility standards in existing systems, stressing the urgency for a fundamental shift in designing solutions for people with disabilities. Overall, this research underscores the vital role of accessible AI in preventing exclusion and discrimination, urging a comprehensive approach to digital accessibility to cater to diverse disability needs.
